2010 Indiana Robotics Invitational (IRI)

Simbot Quatchi

Team 1114 and Simbot Quatchi were invited to attend the Indiana Robotics Invitational (IRI), which once again boasted a strong field including two of the three World Champions (294 and 67) and two of the three World Finalists (1114 and 469). After a few tough losses and poor seeding scores, we found ourselves in 17th position following Friday's matches. After the conclusion of qualifying matches, the top three seeds ended up as Team 330, "Beach Bots", Team 1086, "Blue Cheese" and Team 33, "Killer Bees". After 330 selected Team 469, we were selected by 1086 to join the selected alliance. Our alliance, thanks to the selection order of IRI, was rounded out with Galileo Division Wiiners, Team 2056, "OP Patriotics" and Team 3138, "Innovators Robotics". Our alliance was able to defeat the seventh seeded alliance after two well played matches to face the Killer Bees alliance in the semi finals. The semis went to five matches, which included backup bots from both alliances playing and performing well. After a win, two ties and a loss, we were able to pull out the final match 22-12 after strong midzone play from Teams 1114 and 2056 and front zone play by 1086. Our alliance was up against the first alliance consisting of 330, 469, 359 and 399 in the finals. After a loss in the first match, a change in strategy put Blue Cheese in the far zone to attempt to slow down 469's cycle. After a tie and a Simbot victory, the finals came down to a fourth match. Unfortunately our efforts weren't enough as we lost 22-18.

Congratulations goes to the winning alliance of Team 330, "Beach Bots", Team 469, "Las Guerillas", Team 359, "Hawaiian Kids", and Team 399, "Eagle Robotics". Thanks to Blue Cheese for selecting us, working well with us in alliance selection and strategy discussions and for their excellent ability to play both front zone and far zone in those final matches. Thanks goes to OP Robotics for their excellent midzone play, hanging ability and congratulations to their new drive team who didn't miss a beat in the elimination matches! Thanks as well to Innovators Robotics, who we were thrilled to get in the final round as a backup bot. Only at IRI does a Division Winner make it to the third round, but you stepped in great when our alliance needed you and your far zone play was a difference maker.

And finally, a big thank you goes to family, friends and sponsors once again for all their support in the 2010 season.

2010 World Championship

469, 1114, and 2041 Curie Division Champions

Team 1114 and Quatchi entered the Championships in Atlanta with high hopes and were in a strong Curie Division that included 33 regional victories and teams such as 469 (two MI District Wins and a MI State Championship Win with a unique robot), 1732 (two Regional Wins), 1986 (one Regional Win) and 111. After eight matches through a day and a half of qualifying, we were just five seeding points ahead of Team 111. Friday also included a 6 vs 0 match, where we helped 469 and 111 to a 29-0 victory, our first loss of the season. Thanks to the help of our alliance of Teams 231 and 288, we were able to keep the score differential to only 5 before penalties. Strong matches by 111 on Saturday morning (10-9, 14-6) put the Simbots in a tough position with only one match to play. Thanks to a great alliance and smart strategy, we were able to get a seeding score of 40 and finish 15 points ahead of 111 to earn first seed. We were able to select Team 469, "Las Guerrillas" and Team 2041, "The Robocats". Thanks to the Guerrillas unique design and strategy and Team 2041's defensive play in the near zone to continue the cycle, we were able to become Curie Division Champions in six consecutive matches.

On the Einstein Field we first faced the Archimedes Division Champions Teams 233, 254 and 3357. After two hard fought victories, we advanced to the Einstein Finals to face the Newton Field Champions of 294, 67 and 177. The Newton Champions were able to advance to the Finals after defeating the Galileo Championship Alliance which included fellow Canadians, Team 2056. Unfortunately, after two hard fought matches, strong opposition from the Newton Championship Alliance and a few bad breaks, we were defeated (14-16 and 13-16).

Thanks to Teams 469 and 2041 for all their hard work in the elimination matches. Congratulations goes to the World Champions, Team 67, "The HOT Team", Team 294, "Beach Cities Robotics" and Team 177, "Bobcat Robotics". Congratulations also to Team 2056 for their Division Victory and their Championship Engineering Excellence Award. Thanks to all our friends, family and sponsors for the support and for the spirit of those in attendance in Atlanta. Special thanks to teams 148, 217, 254, 188, 1547 & 2056 for coming to support us in stands throughout the weekend. Congratulations goes to the entire 1114 family for a successful 2010 season.

2010 Great Toronto Regional

1114, 1547, and 2056 hanging

Simbot Quatchi entered its final regional of the 2010 season after successful regionals in Pittsburgh and Waterloo. The team entered the Greater Toronto Regional (GTR) as five-time defending champions (2005-2009), the last three with Team 2056, "Patriotics". Team 1114 and 1114 alumni had a very successful Friday. The Simbots were seeded second with an average seeding score of 21.15 and also took home the regional Best Website Award. Team 2056 were seeded first with an average seeding score of 23.84 and their coach and mentor, Tyler Holtzman, took home the Woodie Flowers Regional Award. Congratulations goes to the former student and mentor of Simbotics. Saturday morning's first match for 1114 was against the first seeded Patriotics. A 17-12 victory handed 2056 just their third loss in the 2010 season (all against 1114) and put 1114 in good position to seed first. The qualifications were finished up with a win and a tie, leaving the Simbotics in position to pick first. This allowed us to select Team 2056 and we were fortunate to have Team 1547, "Where's Waldo" fall to us in the second round. The elimination rounds were competitive once again, with scares in the semi-finals and finals, but for the third straight regional we managed to finish without a single loss. Thus, extending our streak of GTR victories to six. Thanks to 2056 for an amazing offensive output in the close zone and to 1547 for their defensive ability in the middle zone and their end of match hanging ability. Thanks to our partners for creating the first triple hang of the FRC season!

In addition to winning the regional and the website award, we also took home the Coopertition Award and the Industrial Design Award. Congratulations to Team 2056 for their eighth consecutive regional win, to 1114 alumnus Tyler Holtzman for his Regional Woodie Flowers Award and to Team 1547 for their first regional victory.

2010 Waterloo Regional

Simbotics After Winning at Waterloo

After a very successful debut at the Pittsburgh Regional, Simbot Quatchi made his second appearance of the season at the Waterloo Regional. After winning the Waterloo Regional for three consecutive years from 2006 to 2008, Simbotics did not attend this event in 2009. Thus the team was very excited to return to an event which has always felt like a second home. Despite a successful day of qualifying matches on Friday, two disqualifications left us seeded in second place behind our friends from Team 2056, "Patriotics". Saturday morning's schedule saw 1114 facing 2056 in two qualifying matches. These matches were some of the highest scoring matches of the Breakaway season to this point, with 1114 prevailing by scores of 15-12 and 16-11. When the dust settled we were seeded 1st overall with a seeding score of 253 points. This allowed us to select Team 2056 and 2006 FRC World Champions, Team 296 the "Northern Knights" as alliance partners. The elimination rounds were fiercely competitive, but for the second straight regional we managed to finish without losing a single match. Thus, the team was crowned Waterloo Regional Champions for the fourth time. Thanks to 2056 for an amazing offensive performance and to 296 working tirelessly to keep our opponents from scoring.

In additon to winning the regional, we were awarded the Excellence in Design Award for our animation entry, the Engineering Excellence Award for our robot design and the Cooperition Award for excellence in the field coopertating. Special congratulations go out to our friend, Team 1503's Pat Fairbank on winning the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award. It was amazing to be back at the Waterloo Regional where we definitely "got our popcorn ready".

2010 Pittsburgh Regional

Simbotics Getting Ready for a Match

Pittsburgh was the first competition of the 2010 season for Simbotics. After practice matches Thursday night and Friday morning, Simbot Quatchi entered the qualifications with a high score of 20. Friday's qualification rounds went well and through seven matches 1114 was the number one seed by a margin of 12 seeding points over team 63, with a total of seeding score of 141. Friday also brought another award to Team 1114, the Xerox Creativity Award for the unique way in which Quatchi hangs off of the vertical support bars of the tower. After Saturday's qualification matches, Simbotics were in first and selected Team 63, "The Red Barons", and Team 117, "The Steel Dragons", to join our alliance. Fighting through some tough competition and strong defence, we prevailed and were able to win our first Pittsburgh Regional. Thanks to 63 for some excellent close zone scoring and to 117 for great defence on some very capable offensive machines. Also, congratulations to fellow Canadian team, 2809, "K-Botics". Coming off a strong 2009 rookie year, K-Botics showed great improvement throughout the weekend and gave us quite a scare in Saturday's elimination semi-finals. Can't wait to see you guys again in Toronto. Thanks to team members and family who made the trip to Pittsburgh and showed great team spirit. Congrats Quatchi!
