Simbotics at the Ontario Science Centre

Simbotics Robot Exhibit

Starting on October 8th, Team 1114 Simbotics, from Governor Simcoe Secondary School, is taking part in the "I, ROBOT... YOU, ROBOT... WE, ROBOT" exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto.

The exhibit features the team's 2008 FRC World Championship winning robot, Simbot SS, as well as an interactive VEX robot built by the team. This exhibit continues the run of major public appearances by Simbot SS; after winning the FIRST World Championship in 2008, the robot starred in two episodes of the hit Canadian TV Series Degrassi: The Next Generation alongside Grammy nominated, multi platinum selling artist Drake. The exhibit runs until the end of February. It should be exciting for visitors of all ages and we encourage everyone to go check it out!

2011 Indiana Robotics Invitational

strategy meeting

The final event of 1114's season was again the Indiana Robotics Invitational. The 2011 field was tough, including two 2011 World Champions and nine Divisional Champions. With some rule changes and a very strong group of competitors, matches were all very high scoring and had tight margins of victory. Friday's tough qualifying matches left only two undefeated teams, 1114 (7-0-0) and 1126 (6-0-0).

After winning the first qualifying match, Team 1114 needed one more victory to ensure first seed. Unfortunately a missed autonomous mode led to a tough loss in our final match of the day. At the end of the qualifying matches, no undefeated teams remained and our RPs left us in first place. With so many amazing teams to choose from the first pick was a difficult decision. In the end we chose Team 987, The High Rollers with our first selection. With so many great teams available, we were able to select 2011 Michigan State Champion Team 67, The HOT Team, in the second round. With the final pick in the alliance selection, we selected Team 1732, The Hilltoppers.

After 32 of the 66 teams attending were selected, there were still many great teams that missed eliminations. Among them were three 2011 Division Champions: 25, 51 and 781. Also of note, the 24th pick of alliance selection was the #1 Alliance Captain of the World Finalists. It was a great experience to be at an event with so many fantastic teams.

We were able to win our Quarterfinals over the #8 seed including 1126, 233 and 2016 advancing to the Semifinals to face, among others, our friends from Ontario, Team 2056. The first match started with a hard collision between ourselves and 2056 leaving us unable to move for 40 seconds. After some great scoring by 987 and 67 and trying to fight back we still ended up losing a tight match. The second match saw us miss our first ubertube for the only match at IRI, which unfortunately lost us the second match. After two strong matches in the Finals, the #4 alliance were IRI Champions.

Congratulations to our friends 33 (The Killer Bees), 2056 (OP Robotics), 217 (Thunderchickens) and 359 (Hawaiian Kids) on their Championship. Congratulations also goes out to two graduating Simbots, Matthew Coffey and Stacey Willick, on their well-deserved IRI Scholarships. A huge thanks goes to all who bid on Simbot Steve's elevator which ended up going for $450, helping support the IRI Charities.

2011 FIRST Championship

Deploying our minibot

Simbotics entered the 2011 Championships hoping to improve upon last year's World Finalists placing. Joining Team 1114 in the Galileo Division were many strong teams including 254, 469, 111 and fellow Canadian teams 610 and 188. After Thursday and Friday qualifying matches, a few tough losses left us at 6-2-0 in 16th place.

Friday night Simbotics had the opportunity to attend a concert of the Black Eyed Peas. At the concert, Team 359, The Hawaiian Kids were honoured with the 2011 Chairman's Award. Congratulations goes out to them, a well deserved honour.

On Saturday we were able to win our remaining two matches, leaving us in 10th place, just shy of the top 8 alliance captains. Team 1771, The North STARS, selected us with the first pick. In the second round we were able to select 2010 World Champions, Team 294, Beach Cities Robotics. After winning the quarterfinals, we faced a tough alliance in the semis consisting of 469, 610 and 188. After two hard fought matches, we were eliminated. The #2 alliance of 254, 111 and 973 ended up Division Champions and World Champions after defeating 2016, 177 and 781 in the finals.

Congratulations on 254, The Cheesy Poofs, on their first World Championship and to Team 111, WildStang, on their third. Canada was well represented on Einstein with two Division Champions, Team 1503, Spartonics, and Team 781, Kinectic Knights.

Be sure to tune in to ABC on Sunday, August 14th at 7PM for a TV special featuring the Championships and the Black Eyed Peas performance. Read the press release on FIRST's website.

2011 VEX Robotics World Championship

Team 1114X with their robot

Team 1114 had a very successful competition at the VEX Robotics World Championship. At the competition in Kissimmee, Florida at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Simbotics had high hopes to make it far in the tournament. Also competing were 7 more teams from St. Catharines adding to the four teams representing Simbotics. All told, St Catharines, ON represented a total of 11 out of the 417 teams competing. From Thursday to Saturday qualification matches were played, in which records of 6-3, 4-5, 8-1, 5-4 were obtained for 1114A, M, X, and Z respectively.

During Saturday's alliance selection in the Technology Division, 1114X (seeded 6th) was the 5th alliance captain and picked 1509B (Rmageddon) in the first round, and were able to select 1114A in the second, creating an all St. Catharines alliance. After advancing out of the quarter-finals, they were able to beat the strong 1st alliance in 3 rounds in the semis. Unfortunately they were defeated in the divisional finals by a strong 2nd seeded alliance of 1337, 1103 and 254A. 1114X and 1114A finished the weekend Divisional Finalists and 1114X also walked away with the Technology Division Sportsmanship Award.

On the Science Division 1114M was selected by the 1st seeded alliance of 44 (Green Egg Robotics), and 1492Z (W.A.S.A.B.I. 2) in the second round. The 5th alliance on Science of 1447 (RoboSaints) and 254E (The Cheesy Poofs) selected 1114Z. While 1114Z was defeated in the quarter-finals, 1114M and their alliance were able to go all the way in their division to become the Science Division Champions. After that, 44, 1492Z, and 1114M went on to defeat the Technology Champions in two consecutive matches moving on to the Finals of the World Championship. There, the alliance of 44, 1492Z, and 1114M were able to sweep the Math Division Champions in two more quick matches.

Thank you to our World Champion alliance partners 44 and 1492Z for selecting us, as we would not have been able to win without them. Additionally, thanks to all our families, mentors and sponsors for their support through another outstanding VEX Robotics Season.

2056 and 1114 scoring

Team 1114 and Simbot Steve entered the 2011 Waterloo Regional looking to continue their winning ways established at the Pittsburgh Regional in Week 2. We entered Friday’s qualification matches with a difficult schedule ahead of us that saw us face strong competitors such as 2056 and 610 three times each. Despite some tough competition in Friday’s matches we ended the day 9-0 with a Ranking Score of 58, almost 20 higher than any other competitor. We capped off Friday by receiving the Website Award at the end of the day. After two more victories on Saturday morning, we finished as the number 1 seed with a record of 11-0. We were able to form a strong elimination alliance with teams 2056, OP Robotics from Stoney Creek and 3756, RAM-Ferno from London. The first quarterfinal match saw us temporarily set the worldwide high score of 138 only to be topped with a new high score of 147 in QF 1-2. After two wins in the finals we walked away with our second regional victory of the 2011 season and were also presented with the GM Industrial Design Award during the closing ceremonies. 2011 Pittsburgh Regional

Drive teams of 1114, 3492, and 1503

Team 1114's 2011 competition season began with the debut of Simbot Steve at the Pittsburgh Regional. This past year, Simbotics' founding mentor Stephen Rourke tragically passed away. The 2011 season has been dedicated to his memory which included the naming of the robot in his honour: Simbot Steve. Simbot Steve and Simbot VEX Mukmuk overcame some technical difficulties to end the first day in first place with a single loss. We were also honoured with the Engineering Excellence Award. After completing the qualification rounds with two consecutive wins, we finished the event as the number one seed. We were able to select teams 1503, Spartonics from Niagara Falls, Ontario and 3492, ROBOGENS from Winfield, WV. Despite challenges from opposing alliances throughout the elimination matches, we were able to leave as Regional Winners with an undefeated path through the elimination rounds. Thank you to Team 3492 for their strong defensive abilities and energy throughout the elimination rounds and to all volunteers and judges for their support throughout the weekend. A special thanks goes to Team 1503. We were so happy to have the opportunity to share this victory with another NiagaraFIRST team founded by Stephen Rourke. What a perfect memorial.
