2011 VEX Robotics World Championship

Team 1114X with their robot

Team 1114 had a very successful competition at the VEX Robotics World Championship. At the competition in Kissimmee, Florida at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Simbotics had high hopes to make it far in the tournament. Also competing were 7 more teams from St. Catharines adding to the four teams representing Simbotics. All told, St Catharines, ON represented a total of 11 out of the 417 teams competing. From Thursday to Saturday qualification matches were played, in which records of 6-3, 4-5, 8-1, 5-4 were obtained for 1114A, M, X, and Z respectively.

During Saturday's alliance selection in the Technology Division, 1114X (seeded 6th) was the 5th alliance captain and picked 1509B (Rmageddon) in the first round, and were able to select 1114A in the second, creating an all St. Catharines alliance. After advancing out of the quarter-finals, they were able to beat the strong 1st alliance in 3 rounds in the semis. Unfortunately they were defeated in the divisional finals by a strong 2nd seeded alliance of 1337, 1103 and 254A. 1114X and 1114A finished the weekend Divisional Finalists and 1114X also walked away with the Technology Division Sportsmanship Award.

On the Science Division 1114M was selected by the 1st seeded alliance of 44 (Green Egg Robotics), and 1492Z (W.A.S.A.B.I. 2) in the second round. The 5th alliance on Science of 1447 (RoboSaints) and 254E (The Cheesy Poofs) selected 1114Z. While 1114Z was defeated in the quarter-finals, 1114M and their alliance were able to go all the way in their division to become the Science Division Champions. After that, 44, 1492Z, and 1114M went on to defeat the Technology Champions in two consecutive matches moving on to the Finals of the World Championship. There, the alliance of 44, 1492Z, and 1114M were able to sweep the Math Division Champions in two more quick matches.

Thank you to our World Champion alliance partners 44 and 1492Z for selecting us, as we would not have been able to win without them. Additionally, thanks to all our families, mentors and sponsors for their support through another outstanding VEX Robotics Season.
