About Team 1114

Simbotics, Team 1114, is a Hall of Fame team created in 2002 by a passionate group of mentors. With their enthusiasm, these mentors were able to recruit students for Governor Simcoe Secondary School to participate in the program. In their first year of competition, they were able to obtain the Rookie All-Star award and the Creativity award in the Robotics Competition (FRC). Since then, Simbotics has continued to be a dominant force in robotics, winning the 2008 FRC Championship, back to back VEX championships in 2006 and 2007, and currently 19 regional events in the Robotics Competition. Since Simbotics inception, our team has also been increasingly involved with the community, both locally and globally. Through our efforts, we have managed to achieve the FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) Chairman’s award at the regional level 6 times.

Simbotics consists of high school students ages 13 to 18, with approximately 30 students on the team each year. While on the team, students obtain valuable life skills and knowledge to assist them in pursuing post-secondary education, usually in the science and technology fields. While on the team, students work alongside our talented group of mentors, with experience in these fields, who are able to help the students learn more than they would be able to on their own. Simbotics is very thankful to our many mentors who spend countless hours with these students, as well as growing with them as a team. Each year FRC comes out with a new challenge that the team has 6 weeks to design, build, and program a robot to compete in each year’s game. For these 6 weeks members of the team dedicate countless hours to the program in order to be ready for the competitions. Each year the game is unique and has different robot attributes from previous years, requiring students to be able to work quickly and effectively over these 6 weeks in order to do well.

As well as being actively involved in FRC, Simbotics is also involved in VRC (VEX Robotics Competition). This competition involves building robots on a smaller scale, and competing in a different game each year. These games are released each year by VEX and teams are able to work on their robots year-round. Simbotics takes advantage of this by iterating there designs to be more competitive after each competition.

While designing our robots for competition there are a few attributes that Simbotics strives for; one of the most important of these is simplicity. Through our designs, we aim to make our mechanisms and robots as a whole simple. We attribute much of our success in recent years to this. Our team also knows that design is an iterative process. This is why we are constantly modifying and improving our robot designs. Our team knows to work within our limits though. As said by lead mentor, Karthik Kanagasabapathy, “The jack of all trades is the master of none.” We use this philosophy to attempt to build a strong, specialized robot all the while staying within our means. Although Simbotics has many generous sponsors, and numerous resources, we are still able to understand our limits and work our best within them.

At competitions Simbotics works hard to achieve the high results that we consistently achieve. This is due to our large amount of concentration, as well as our dedication towards each season’s goals. All team members work extremely hard to achieve these goals all season long.

Simbotics strives to be a role model in the robotics community, and uses our influence to help other teams to be successful. Our team actively seeks areas to start new teams in FRC, VRC, as well as FLL. Our team assists these teams to ensure that they have the solid background required to continue on their own. Our team also provides many online resources available for all robotics teams, from our seminars on topics such as Robot Design, and Running a Team, and also providing a scouting database that is updated annually before the Championship for all teams.

Our team strives to spread STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). As said by Dean Kamen, Co-Founder of, “To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.” Our team believes in inspiring young people to be tomorrow’s science and technology leaders, and we firmly believe in these ideals, and work to promote these everywhere.

Of course none of what makes this team great would be possible without our sponsors, our dedicated mentors, and inspiring teachers. Thanks to everyone who makes this team possible!
